Hello, VIVA Creative!
Hello, I’m J.D. Humphreys, a Creative Director with a passion for storytelling, strategy, and innovation. Throughout my career, I’ve led teams in crafting unforgettable brand experiences across video, design, events, and digital. From national campaigns to immersive live productions, I thrive at translating complex ideas into engaging, high-impact creative that moves audiences and drives results.
VIVA Creative’s mission to push boundaries and create transformative work resonates deeply with me. I bring a strategic mindset, a hands-on approach, and a track record of leading creative teams to deliver exceptional experiences for Fortune 500 brands and mission-driven organizations alike. Whether it’s conceptualizing compelling narratives, designing immersive events, or developing dynamic digital content, I know how to bring ideas to life in ways that captivate and inspire.
Here are selected projects in video, design, events, and digital where I led the strategy, developed the theme, wrote the script, and oversaw execution. I invite you to explore my work below and on my site.
Fun fact: We are neighbors! I've called Rockville home for the past 10 years.

"Experts in the Field" Mini-Documentary for FEMA
FEMA needed to educate Pacific Northwest residents on the science behind flood mapping and why their insurance rates were changing. But trust doesn’t come easily—especially when it involves rising costs. Rather than relying solely on data, I took a different approach. I identified and personally reached out to one of the region’s most respected meteorologists, knowing that his credibility and deep connection with the community would make the message more impactful. I developed the strategy, collaborated with experts to craft a clear and compelling narrative, wrote the script, and oversaw the entire production—ensuring the final piece not only informed but resonated with the audience.

"From Coverage to Care" :60 Video for Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services
How do you get people to actually use their new health insurance—not just have it, but take advantage of it to live healthier, longer lives? You show them what they’re missing. I crafted a campaign that made unexpected yet relatable comparisons—like buying a brand-new TV but never taking it out of the box. That simple analogy turned a complicated topic into an "aha" moment. I developed the strategy, wrote the script, collaborated with animators to shape the visual storytelling, and ensured every detail of the final execution made an impact.

Sherwin-Williams "Color Chips" TV Campaign
Sherwin-Williams sells over 1,500 colors—but we wanted people to experience them. Instead of just showing painted walls, we asked, Where Will Color Take You? and built entire worlds from the iconic color chip. From lush forests to deep oceans, every scene was a journey into imagination, proving that color isn’t just a choice—it’s an adventure. As lead creative, I shaped the vision, wrote scripts, and crafted animation sequences that turned simple color swatches into storytelling.

Design
Humane Rescue Alliance Logo
Two historic animal welfare organizations—Washington Humane Society and Washington Animal Rescue League—came together to form something groundbreaking: the Humane Rescue Alliance. This first-of-its-kind merger created an end-to-end animal care network in a major U.S. city. Our team was entrusted with shaping its new identity. I led the strategy, creative direction, and visual identity guidelines, ensuring the brand launch was as bold and compassionate as its mission.

Kendrick Lamar DAMN. Tour Poster
For Kendrick Lamar’s limited-edition Prudential Center poster, I reimagined a DNA double helix as a gold chain—symbolizing lineage, power, and lyrical precision. The strategy was to create an illustration as layered as his music, blending science and culture into a bold, iconic design. Every detail was intentional, making the poster not just a keepsake, but a visual extension of his artistry.

The Ben — Marriott Autograph Collection Visual Identity
As Creative Director, I led the strategy, design approach, and visual identity for The Ben, drawing inspiration from Byrd Spilman Dewey’s legacy. I worked closely with architects to blend historic charm with modern sophistication, creating a unique West Palm Beach retreat. The design features coastal views, a prime downtown location, and a reimagined classic hotel experience. This project was done in collaboration with EoA Group.

Events
WUSA9 Weather Classroom
As Creative Director, I developed the strategy and theme for WUSA9's Weather School program, transforming meteorologist visits into an ongoing educational initiative. With strong engagement from schools and the excitement of ECO9 (first of its kind hybrid news vehicle), promotion led to 100+ visit requests in a month. Collaborating with Meteorologist Makayla Lucero, I co-created an illustrated booklet with weather insights, games, and activities to extend learning beyond the classroom.

National Flood Insurance Program 50th Event
Celebrating 50 years of the National Flood Insurance Program, Resilience Action Partners— a joint venture between Ogilvy and Michael Baker International—strategically crafted a unified event identity for the Association of State Floodplain Managers Conference. Centered on the theme "50 Years of Resilience," the approach combined a strong visual narrative with an engaging experience, including a logo, dynamic pattern design, and branded swag, reinforcing the program’s legacy while fostering connection among attendees.

Triangle Corporate Battle of the Bands
At McKinney, I turned the Triangle Corporate Battle of the Bands into a high-energy showdown where suits became rockstars—all for a good cause. I developed the theme, built the strategy to pack the house and raise funds, and kept the tradition rocking year after year. Leading the creative, I brought the event to life with bold visuals, epic characters symbolizing the musical battle, and everything from program booklets to table décor. The result? A legendary night of music and these series of events over the years have raised $300,000 for local nonprofits!

Digital
IMMERSED Virtual Reality Experience
To shift perceptions on flood risk, FEMA needed more than another white paper—it needed impact. Partnering with Brightline Interactive, I led the creation of IMMERSED, an interactive VR experience that puts users in the shoes of a community official during a flood. Our strategy was to make flood mitigation resonate long after the headset comes off, driving awareness through immersion. I oversaw theme development, scriptwriting, voice casting, and collaboration with developers and subject matter experts to ensure accuracy. Designed for mobility, IMMERSED brought the urgency of flood preparedness to conferences and events nationwide.

At SCOUT Bags, I led the successful revamp of their retail website, shifting the focus from promotions to lifestyle-driven storytelling. Our strategy prioritized seamless navigation and discovery, using vibrant photography to showcase the brand’s diverse offerings. We enhanced the user experience across all devices, optimizing mobile shopping and ultimately transitioning to Shopify to expand e-commerce capabilities.
